The waiting room: the four published clocks that set the price of everything built in 2026

Capital moves in hours and the physical world moves in years, and in 2026 the gap between them became the most valuable thing in the economy. Where the gold actually sits, and what moving it involves

The story of central banks hauling their gold home has been told for years, and the 2026 record does not support it. The Netherlands shifted about 86 tonnes out of New York and Ottawa and finished with London as its largest single vault. France sold 129 tonnes in New York and bought replacements in Europe, which the central bank did not describe as a physical relocation. What is actually happening is a reallocation toward markets where gold can be traded, which is close to the opposite of the popular account.

What a licence actually licenses: two years of sanctions exceptions, read as a single document

A sanctions programme is written as a wall of prohibitions, and nearly all of the trade that continues happens through the gaps built into it. Those gaps are called licences, and the published record of them is one of the most revealing documents in economic statecraft: it shows which companies were given time to leave, which were allowed to keep operating, and which sale was permitted to be negotiated but not completed. Read in sequence, the letters and dates describe a policy changing its mind.
